Today, smart cities and connected cars depend on data sharing to reach their full potential. This requires trust, data-privacy tools, and ways to control data sharing, either openly or selectively, with ecosystem partners. Most importantly, it requires an open standards approach that allows public and private sector organisations to collaborate strategically for the long term. The oneM2M standard has been designed to provide services and capabilities to ease the implementation of IoT service platforms needed for smart cities.
Hosted by oneM2M on March 11, professors at the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIITH) took part in an exclusive webinar to explore India's first living lab for smart city research. With more than 63 attendees, listeners heard how the living lab can be used as a testbench for IoT based smart city implementations. Taking inspiration from India's Smart City Mission, aiming to develop 100 cities across the country, the lab will be based on the oneM2M standard and will see multiple implementations from different vendors and open sources.
During the webinar - India's First Living Lab at IIITH: use case for oneM2M - Sachin Chaudhari, Assistant Professor and Ramesh Loghanathan, Professor of Co-Innovation at IIIT Hyderabad, addressed the main objectives of the living lab which includes cutting-edge research on different smart city verticals and how AI/ML researchers can generate data. The webinar also encouraged start-ups and companies to test their solutions in a real-world environment on a small scale, by using the living lab, before deploying it on city scale. Overall, the webinar highlighted that now, more than ever, standards are critical to the success of smart cities where IoT applications play a major role.
"We are happy to be working towards the Government of India's Smart City Mission, our centers aim is to develop AI and embedded systems technologies for our cities to enable good standard of living and sustainable environment through smart solutions," said Ramesh Loghanathan, Professor of Co-Innovation at IIIT Hyderabad. "Our campus is being converted into a Living Lab to allow new technologies and innovations to be developed and proven."
After receiving his Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Technology in 2012, Sachin Chaudhari's research interests involve signal processing for wireless communication and particularly, cognitive radios, 5G, and Internet of Things (IoT). After 25 years in the product Research and Development sector, Ramesh Loghanathan, helps to grow the Technology Transfer Office, Co-Innovation labs, Entrepreneur on Residence program and the Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at IIIT Hyderabad.
