The workshop forms part of the ongoing collaboration between oneM2M and the IIC, which was created to promote the digital economy by preventing fragmentation and harmonising various aspects in the IIoT.
Collaboration across the IIoT ecosystem is core to the success of oneM2M. As oneM2M integrates new requirements and legacy industry protocols into the standardisation roadmap for horizontal IoT platforms, it maintains relationships with various industry organizations, like the IIC.
"The challenges posed by the IIoT are very different to those posed by consumer applications, making work to develop standards that ensure interoperability crucial," said oneM2M's Technical Plenary Chair Dr. Omar Elloumi, of Nokia. "By working together on use cases and testbeds, oneM2M and the IIC are ensuring that the next phase of IIoT development is secure and scalable. This workshop will provide an invaluable opportunity to discuss the progress of the IIoT and determine how oneM2M's interworking capabilities can be leveraged for the next steps in its development."
The event will feature speakers from both organisations, who will explore the importance of interoperability between emerging horizontal technologies and its role in ensuring scalability across vertical industries.
Attendees will also hear how the IIC's testbed program is helping drive the IIoT ecosystem development, as well as insights into specific industry requirements and discussions on the challenges, best practices and reasonable expectations for the IIoT.
"IIoT applications span a variety of industry verticals, each with a unique set of challenges, and necessitate the integration of a number of emerging technologies. Bringing together the various stakeholders to identify and address these challenges is essential to deliver on the promise of IoT," said Wael William Diab, Chair, IIC Liaison Working Group and Senior Director, Huawei. "IIC and oneM2M have been engaged in this type of collaboration through their liaison relationship. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for experts to participate in the discussion of how horizontal standards developed by oneM2M alongside the frameworks, testbeds and use cases developed by IIC address the emerging IIoT challenges and opportunities."
The workshop will take place on Thursday, February 8 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Reston, Virginia. For more information on the event, please visit http://www.iiconsortium.org/liaison-workshop.htm.
About oneM2M
oneM2M is the global standards initiative that covers requirements, architecture, API specifications, security solutions and interoperability for Machine-to-Machine and IoT technologies. oneM2M was formed in 2012 and consists of eight of the world's preeminent standards development organisations: ARIB (Japan), ATIS (U.S.), CCSA (China), ETSI (Europe), TIA (U.S.), TSDSI (India), TTA (Korea), and TTC (Japan), together with five industry fora or consortia (Broadband Forum, CEN, CENELEC, GlobalPlatform, OMA) and over 200 member organisations. oneM2M specifications provide a framework to support applications and services such as the smart grid, connected car, home automation, public safety, and health. oneM2M actively encourages industry associations and forums with specific application requirements to participate in oneM2M, in order to ensure that the solutions developed support their specific needs. For more information, including how to join and participate in oneM2M, see: www.onem2m.org.
