In a contribution for oneM2M’s Industry Day held in Tokyo (Japan) on 6 December 2023, Bob Flynn addressed the topic of how to build a smart city. His talk examined the pitfalls of building silo solutions as well as approaches that aim to expand a small, initial solution. Problems arise because of difficulties in managing data ownership, scalability, reliability, and cost effectiveness. By relying on the horizontal architecture and interoperability principles enshrined in oneM2M’s open standard, developers can start small while preserving a path towards federated applications. They can also explore the many collaborative opportunities enabled through the use of data models and semantic interoperability within an open standard framework.
